I finally found out why *some *machines worked and some didn't. On machines
with slipstreamed Windows 7 Service Pack 1, uninstalling the aforementioned
three updates did the trick. On machines with Service Pack 1 (KB976932), I
had to uninstall it - and afterwards password changes worked. I'm not sure
I want to uninstall SP1 from hundreds of machines though... So more study
is needed.
