OK, I fixed the problem with systemd, I removed systemd :-)

I can now confirm that you can build samba 4.2 on Debian Jessie and it
will work

I installed it as a member server and properly setup it returns this:

root at jesdeb:~# getent passwd rowland
rowland:*:10000:10000:Rowland Penny:/home/rowland:/bin/bash

I installed these packages to compile Samba:

build-essential libacl1-dev libattr1-dev libblkid-dev libgnutls28-dev
libreadline-dev python-dev libpam0g-dev python-dnspython gdb pkg-config
libpopt-dev libldap2-dev dnsutils libbsd-dev attr krb5-user docbook-xsl
libcups2-dev acl libkrb5-dev libssl-dev xsltproc krb5-config libpam-krb5

Now if some wise person that understands systemd and knows how to get it
to start the 'nmbd', 'winbindd' & 'smbd' daemons, could post an howto, I
am quite prepared to try it, but until then, a certain LP can stick
systemd where the sun doesn't shine.
