Hai,

Just a tip for the people reading the list.

if you see Failed DNS update - NT_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT  or messages :  RPC unavailable if you connect from windows client to the samba AD DC server

Read this.

I have a "test' AD DC on a XEN server running and this DC does nothing.
1 pc ( win7) is joined, some dns recored are set, nothing special..

today i checked the logs, and totaly out of the blue is see..

[2015/02/24 15:11:44.480393,  0] ../source4/smbd/server.c:370(binary_smbd_main)

  ../source4/dsdb/dns/dns_update.c:294: Failed DNS update - NT_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT
.... until today..

now i did see..
samba version 4.1.16-SerNet-Debian-9.wheezy started.

and i just remembered i saw and upgrade to 4.1.17..

apt-cache policy sernet-samba-ad
sernet-samba-ad:
  Installed: 99:4.1.17-9
  Candidate: 99:4.1.17-9

so correct..

( for debian apt-get install debian-goodies )
i checked with : checkrestart

and checkrestart reported me to restart:
service sernet-samba-ad restart
service ssh restart
service sudo restart
service sernet-samba-smbd restart
service sernet-samba-nmbd restart
service bind9 restart

restarted, checked again, again the same restart where adviced.
so i restarted the server, and here you go...
away are the

Failed DNS update - NT_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT messages.

Point of this story..

if you have : RPC Errors, or Failed DNS update - NT_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT
check the running version and the installed version and restart samba services or your server.
