OK, thanks.
I added
wins support = Yes
to the DC
and
wins server = 192.168.1.16
to the client

This isn't necessary for openSUSE clients in the domain, I'm wondering 
why it would be necessary for Ubuntu.

Anyway, still no go. The dns update still fails:(
