netbios name is the short name

server
vs
server.domain.com

Its an older protocol, and becoming less relevant but often a necessity
in a mixed OS environment.

in my case, I have a few *nix varieties plus some Windows machine. To
make everything work smoothly, I include this is in my smb.conf

  wins support = Yes
  remote announce = 10.100.3.255 10.200.3.255 10.101.3.255 10.205.3.255
  remote browse sync = 10.100.3.255 10.200.3.255 10.101.3.255 10.205.3.255

and push out my samba servers IP via dhcp to my clients

Andy
