If you added that exact line 'vfs objects = recycle' to smb.conf then 
you have turned off 'vfs objects = acl_xattr'.
This coupled with you using NTVFS is probably why it now works. As Marc 
said, NTVFS is really no longer supported and again as Marc said, you 
would probably be better off starting again but this time with ' 
--use-rfc2307' instead of '--use-ntvfs'.
