[Samba] What in samba 4.1 prevents a '/' share?

Hai David,
I re-tested this for your, this works ok for me.
on the server ( samba 4.1.2 sernet samba)
[root]
path = /
read only = No
on client 3.6.6 Debian
mount -t cifs -o username=Administrator,domain=DOMAIN,sec=ntlmv2 //SERVERNAME1/root /mnt
df -h gives.
//SERVERNAME1/root 9.1G 645M 8.0G 8% /mnt
ls -al /mnt/
total 4
drwxr-xr-x 25 root root 0 2013-12-04 10:42 .
drwxr-xr-x 24 root root 4096 2012-09-06 09:24 ..
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2013-11-07 16:57 bin
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 0 2013-12-04 10:42 boot
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 0 2013-10-25 12:49 build

Time issues in your setup maybe?
my samba client uses : ( Debian Lenny )
smbd -V gives : Version 3.5.6 ( 3.5.6~dfsg-3~bpo50+1 )
cifs-utils 2:4.1-1~bpo50+1 Common Internet File System utilities
kernel : 2.6.32-bpo.5-amd64
