Just to let you know.
I've just "solved" the problem.
It is not in fact a solution, but a workaround.
Analyzing both the logs from the domain JMU (the new one, that didn't
work) and the domain STM (the old one, that worked OK with 98 machines)
I've noticed something I haven't noticed before.
The "old" installation didn't return groups when a user asked for the
user list. The new one, did.
The problem was probably in some kind of incompatibility between the
group data format sent by Samba and Win98. I've even tried to update
msab32.dll on the w98 machine (there's a MS-KB record about the same
problem with w98 workstations and win2000 AD domain servers) but id
didn't work either.
This way, I've just changed "ldap group suffix = ou=Grupos" to "ldap
group suffix = no" on smb.conf for this to work. I have lost group
funcionality with this setting (I can add users to ldap groups, but I
can't share a resource to a group, nor in Windows nor in Samba, I have
to explictly add every user which will have access to the shared
resource), but that's not quite a problem, since the old setup has
functioned this way for over four years.
For those fighting with w98 and user lists, this may be a workaround.
Best wishes,
Ubirata
