What type of backend are you using?

If you are using LDAP, the migration should be easy,
without major problems, but you still need to test it, at least
with one client (just to be sure).

If you are not using LDAP, you need to copy a few tdb
files to keep the status and information history and avoid
problems like rejoining machines to the domain. I'm not sure
about how "painless" it is going to be, because I usually
update Samba versions but always Debian... between a Debian
and a RedHat it could require a few extra checks.

Perhaps, this [1]entry in the FAQ of Samba Wiki can
help you to define what you should backup. Anyway, if you are
able to install the new machine and test it, you can pretty
safe copy the files and do some tests on the lab. :)
