I'm guessing that Win98 connects with no username or password, but XP
connects with the credentials used when you logged in or originally
installed it.

If you're not worried about security, add "public = yes" and "writable
= yes" to the share config and that will allow all users to write to
the share (assuming the underlying file permissions are okay - if not,
look up the "force user" and "force group" options.)
