[Samba] samba-3.0.6 on Redhat AS3

Samba Gurus,
                     am running samba-3.0.6 on Redhat AS3 on a RISC IBM
P520.

Editing a basic text file in dos via a mapped drive (to /tmp) takes
minutes to read and write ?
Also when opened with windows EDIT has  M SMB. Followed by 3 strange
characters  ?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
