[Samba] smbd hangs regardless of version

I am new to samba and am having a problem with smbd starting. It just hangs when I run smbd -D. I set the debug level to 10 and the log file looks like this:

I have gone through all the suggestions and documents on samba.org and have tried several versions, all with the same result.
 
The machine I am installing it on is an IBM xServer running AIX 5.2. I tried precompiled binaries as well and compiling the latest source. I had samba 2.0.7 running on a similar machine, but am unable to getting to run on this machine. It seems to be something network related. The firewall has been taken down, still no luck.
 
Any insight as to where to look from here is appreciated. By the way, nmbd runs fine.
