I've been unable to find any up-to-date information on the problem with
solaris and winbind nsswitch.conf. It seems that Solaris doesn't like
the winbind option in /etc/nsswitch.conf very much at all. When using
the passwd program, it complains:

<snip>
# passwd pad
passwd:  Changing password for pad
Supported configurations for passwd management are as follows:
    passwd: files
    passwd: files ldap
    passwd: files nis
    passwd: files nisplus
    passwd: compat
    passwd: compat AND
    passwd_compat: ldap OR
    passwd_compat: nisplus
Please check your /etc/nsswitch.conf file
Permission denied
</snip>

My temporary solution is to wrap /usr/bin/passwd with a script that
modifies the nsswitch.conf file, removing the winbind option, then calls
passwd, then changes it back to include the winbind option. :-/

I hope there is a more elegant way...
using sparc solaris 8, samba 3.0.4. All other aspects of winbind and
samba are working flawlessly.

Please include me in the reply, I'm not subscribed to this list.

thanks,
