just downgraded to 3.0.5.
3.0.6 also broke the passwords so 3.0.5 could not even find the
files and complained about an "unkown version"
[004/08/24 16:20:34, 0] passdb/pdb_tdb.c:tdbsam_tdbopen(201)
TDBSAM version unknown: 2
[2004/08/24 16:20:34, 0] passdb/pdb_tdb.c:tdbsam_getsampwnam(417)
pdb_getsampwnam: TDB passwd (/var/lib/samba/passdb.tdb) did not exist.
File successfully created

normally users are validated through the domain, there are no local
accounts, I just used one for testing.

I could not read a single file, but writing was possible!
GRuss Georg
my other server (no PDC, just fileserver) works perfectly with the same
configuration.
