If only 1 or 2 users log into that box, you can set those users up as
local admins on that XP box, log in as one of the users you set up and
go to Control Panel->Admin Tools->Services : open up properties of the
workstation service, click on the Recovery tab and set First Failure,
Second Failure, and Subsequent Failures to "Restart the Service".
Roaming profiles won't work, but you will have access to shares on your
samba server. This will also run any logon batch files the server hands
out and it will also map drives. The downside to this is that (again)
Roaming profiles will not work, and it takes several minutes to log in
the first time after a restart. So, while this is a horrible solution,
it can be useful in some cases until this problem is solved. Out of the
8 machines that are having a problem, only 1 didn't work with this
temporary solution.
