[Samba] smbclient puking out on resolve_hosts

I have a linux machine with two windows machines,
an xp machine and a 98 machine

The command smbclient -L xp_machine
fails on resolve_hosts but then goes on 
to resolve_wins when trying to connect to
the xp machine.

smbclient -L 98_machine pukes out on 
resolve_hosts 

error connecting to 0.20etc etc   (Invalid argument)
error connecting to 0.20 etc etc  (invalid argument)
connection to 98_machine failed
