[Samba] user name problem in samba 2.2.3a

I am running debian testing with samba 2.2.3a
all users are XP/win2k some usernames are first and last. i.e. "john smith"
So those with a 2 part username in windows have to enter a second username
and password to access samba shares.
How can I get samba to use these usernames? currently I have samba using
just their first name and password as authentication.
