Thanks for the quick answer (unfortunately it did not work)!

I have also the row 'client signing = yes' in smb.conf and 'testparm -v' 
tells it is on.

The connection is over a PPTP tunnel, if that is any help (connection 
worked fine with Windows 2000 server and samba 2.2.5).
