[Samba] Date time change

We have a problem that when Excel is just viewing a file and then closed 
without
writing.  The time and date are changed to the current time and date.  I 
know this
will happen when the file is written because of the way Microsoft does 
this, but
when the file is just viewed and not written, I do not understand why 
the date and
time are changed.
Can anybody tell me why and is there any way to prevent this from happening.
My Samba server is a SUN Ultra60, Solaris 8 and Samba 2.2.5.
