[Samba] restircting characters in filenames

is there a way to restrict allowable characters in filenames?
I just loathe it when I see a filename with spaces or worse commas!
So I was wondering if you could tell samba or linux below not to allow these
types and then run some recursive regular expression which replaces the
spaces and commas with dashes.

Any information on restricting or running the regular expression would be
greatly appreciated.
