[Samba] "chdir failed" while mounting samba share

hi
 
i try to mount a samba share from a windowsclient
 
the entry in the smb.conf is:
 
[formax]
path = /home/DOMAIN/stefan1/Desktop
read only = yes
browseable = yes
valid users = DOMAIN:stefan1 DOMAIN:max
create mode = 0444
 
when i connect with DOMAIN:max the smbd log says:
 
Jul 21 19:36:43 linux smbd[9088]: [2003/07/21 19:36:43, 0] smbd/service.c:set_current_service(56)
Jul 21 19:36:43 linux smbd[9088]:   chdir (/home/DOMAIN/stefan1/Desktop) failed

what can cause that error? is it a problem with changing the permission?
 
i've added "auth required pam_winbind.so" into /etc/pam.d/samba -> is that the right way to tell samba how to authenticate users??
