 [homes]
    comment = Home Directories
    browseable = no
    writable = yes

an attempt to access an existing home directory fails

 $ smbclient  //myhost/deejoe
 added interface ip=129.186.XXX.YYY bcast=129.186.XXX.255
 nmask=255.255.255.0
 Password:
 Domain=[MDKGROUP] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 2.2.0]
 tree connect failed: ERRDOS - ERRnosuchshare (You specified an invalid
 share name)

The same smb.conf [homes] stanza in 2.0.7 serves up home directories just
fine.

An explicitly defined share works fine:

[tmp]
   comment = Temporary file space
   path = /tmp
   read only = no
;   public = yes

[deejoe at myhost deejoe]$ smbclient //myhost/tmp
added interface ip=129.186.XXX.YYY bcast=129.186.XXX.255
nmask=255.255.255.0
Password:
Domain=[MDKGROUP] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 2.2.0]
smb: \>

(Codepage messages went away when I made a symlink

/etc/codepages -> /usr/share/samba/codepages)
