Looks like I'm not the only one having this problem.  I've submitted 
this bug on Bugzilla:

It looks like this happens across multiple versions of Samba.  One 
person who's emailed me says the problem just went away and he has no 
idea how.

This has been a major show stopper for me for over a week now.   I've 
follow the Samba HOWTO by Kurt Pfeifle to the letter.  Everything seems 
to work except the driver download, which is a major problem considering 
I'm trying to build a samba appliance...
