[Samba] Compile issue on SuSE 8.1

Hi all, 

I cannot get samba (nor any other new source code for that matter) to compile 
on my SuSE 8.1 machine. I have already successfully compiled samba-2.2.8 on 
my FreeBSD 5.0 machine and it is running quite well.

When I try to compile samba on the SuSE 8.1 machine, I just get as far as 
./configure (with options). Afterwards make issues "command not found" even 
though I am still in the source directory.
