[Samba] Query

Hello,

We have been trying to link our Linux database over our network (3 x Windows XP machines, 1 x Linux) using samba and TK Perl on windows XP professional.   We have been unable to connect successfully due to Samba actively refusing requests.  My question is : will this be possible at all?, I read that windows active directory may cause problems, is this true?
