[Samba] 2.2.6 smb.init script help

Hi,
I'm running RedHat 7.2, kernel 2.4.19.

I just installed Samba 2.2.6 from scratch and copied the
smb.init script to the /etc/rc.d directory.

When executing the start script I got the error message first

smbd: execvp: No such file or directory
smb: smbd startup  failed
nmbd: execvp: No such file or directory
smb: nmbd startup  failed

So I just added the path to the script:

PATH=/usr/local/samba/bin:$PATH
export PATH

Now I just get the error messages:
smb: smbd startup  failed
smb: nmbd startup  failed

without further details.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or what I can do here?
