2.2.1 is very old and has lots of bugs...
upgrade to 2.2.6 when that comes out this week
(or if you cant wait use 2.2.5)

this should be yes - otherwise everybody can write.

have you enable acls on the server's filesystem? It sounds like that is
what you want...
