I think it might work.  You should check the Samba web site for
information about what's new since 2.0.7.

The question is not so much the hardware, but how old the system
libraries are.

You might like to compile Samba on another, faster machine and transfer
it across.  If you build using 

  CFLAGS=-static ./configure

then there should not be any dependencies on the libraries of the
build machine.
