Dou you mean that it says "device is busy" ?

When you get that message there is a process still accessing the mount,
and you must remove that process before umounting.


When the server is shut down processes tend to hang on smbfs. That is
probably what has happened to you. If you wait long enough they will time
out.

You can also test this patch for 2.4.19-pre9 that should make processes
time out after 30 seconds:
