slow transfers

I seem to have a problem transferring large files onto the server.
currently my server will recieve files over samba some 20 times slower than 
'normal' (compared to ftp transfers).
I'm running samba 2.2.0 on my samba domain controller with linux 
w/samba2.2.0, win98 and winME clients.
I'm running redhat 7.0 on one server machine and redhat7.1 on the domain 
controller....

any ideas?
