workgroups with samba virtual server

I've looked at this; the biggest problem I see is that the various 
/var/lock/pid files are compiled in.  I have not found any conf file 
settings for this.  I have not pursued this a lot; but it seems to me 
that you would have to have separate binaries so the smbd and nmbd.pid 
files would not get messed up....

That's where I stopped.  I don't know how (or if) file locking would 
work with separate daemons accessing potentially the same files.

Any thoughts?  As I am "live" it's kind of hard for me to test what 
could potentially be a disastrous situation......
