I would guess that excel is trying to check the ACL to see if you can 
access it.  Options are probably :

   Check the access permissions on that file, and widen them a bit.
   Disable NT ACL support for that share.
   Compile the kernel to support ACLs and check that the ACL looks okay and 
then open
