OK, here goes, as best as I can remember what we did.

1)  Install Win2K.  [ :) ]  
2)  Install Win2K service pack 2.
3)  Install Morpheus.
4)  Install WinAmp.

Next a branch that I don't _think_ is relevant -- but I could be wrong.

5)  Tell Morpheus to share a bunch of MP3s on a Samba share.
6)  Download some MP3s.
7)  Try to rename an MP3 on the Samba share outside of Morpheus.
8)  When it fails, kill Morpheus and try renaming again.
9)  When THAT fails, make Morpheus not start automatically and reboot
    before trying again.

Back to the relevant bit:

10) Open the Samba share.
11) Try to rename an MP3.

All the renaming is happening from the Windows desktop.  My girlfriend has
a shortcut on the desktop to her Samba share -- she double-clicks that,
navigates down through the folders until she gets to the right one, then
selects the MP3, right-clicks, and picks Rename off the menu.  (I tend to
select the MP3, then left-click slowly enough to get to rename.  Same
result either way.)

When you left-click the MP3, over to the left where you'd get a thumbnail
for a JPEG, you should get a set of stop-pause-play-etc. controls (y'know,
the Typical Music Transport controls ripped off from tape players).  I
believe that this is WinAmp offering to 'preview' the file, and I believe
that it _is_ relevant to the problem, since we ONLY ran into the problem
trying to rename shared MP3s.

When you hit RETURN renaming the file, you should get a Sharing Violation.
We did, every time.  [ :) ]

Again, what I see going through the code is that check_file_sharing finds
exactly one sharing mode.  The type of that mode is 0, and the owner is the
Samba process trying to reply to the rename request.  Since 0 does not mean
"using a batch oplock," the code that you have in check_file_sharing to 
break batch oplocks never runs, and you get a sharing violation.  In my
admittedly ignorant view, this seems like WinAmp opening the file for
'preview' without locking it, and then everything getting confused.
