[Samba] Security on lan

Hello, I would like your opionion on how secure samba is over an network.

The thing is that where i live we all have 100mbps switched network to the
internet. The whole town is using this. Is it safe to use samba directly
over the network with encrypted password if i have for example a server in
another part of the town. I can then set up with allow host so that only my
computer can access the computer or should i go with a pptp solution?
