Samba HEAD already does this properly.  Samba 2.2 only allows this via
PAM.  I don't think that patch will make it in - particularly becouse it
only affects domain logons, and fixing it for other password checks is
non-trivial (hence why I rewrote the entire auth subsystem in HEAD).
