I have the same problem with redhat 7.2 and samba 2.2.3 using win2k sp2 both 
on i386.  In my case I get the following

  oplock_break: receive_smb error (Success)
  oplock_break failed for file ~WRD0000.tmp (dev = 301, inode = 32690, 
file_id = 394).
[2002/02/04 13:38:27, 0] smbd/oplock.c:oplock_break(843)
  oplock_break: client failure in break - shutting down this smbd.
[2002/02/04 13:46:28, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_data(436)
  read_data: read failure for 4. Error = Connection reset by peer
