Just a guess.
I had a similar problem. It was due to case conversions.
Try putting some shares and files on your linux server all in UPPER case and
some all in lower case, and see what happens.
Of course, you could set your debug level to 3 and look to see just what the
linux server thinks it is trying to find.
I solved my problem by leaving out all references to case conversion in my
smbd.conf file, that is, accepting all the defaults.
