ip address versus server name

Hello All:
When using Samba at work I noticed that the privileges are different if I
use the IP address or the name of the server in the MicroSoft mapping. This
may not be a Samba issue at all and my apologies if it isn't. I checked the
documentation, FAQs, etc to no avail.
Here's what I'm seeing:
1) If you use the IP address in the mapping Samba will respect the
privileges and allow you to create/remove via the owner/group.
2) If you use the server name in the mapping you will get refused even if
the owner/group privileges should allow you access. It seems to default to
the world privileges if used like this.
I'm running version 2.2.2-pre.
Any help would be greatly appreciated ...
Many thanks,
