Samba/Linux in general

Is is true that there is a finite number process IDs that linux?  This cam
up in a linux/samba questions.  Two sites where I deployed Linux with Samba
as the NT Domain controller (a SOHO) have truely been trouble free.  The
boxes had not been rebooted in 5 months with no problem.  A collegue tells
me of a Maximum PID number?  Is there limit?  The solution is easily solved
with a cron job to periodically reboot, but it sure sounded strange to me.
Lasy I checked the PID had reached nearly 30,000, before rebooted the box.
