Login woes

I have installed a RedHat Linux/Samba box as a login/file/print server for a
client.  It seems to work fine once the user has logged in, even providing
Login scripts as desired.  However, it often, maybe usually, requires the
user to attempt login multiple (2-15) times before allowing them access to
the server.

Where should I look to debug this?  I have looked in the
/var/log/samba/log.smb/nmb files, but I have been unable to identify the
cause of the problem.
