Checking on samba

I posted this during the holidays, received no replies, hoping that the 
gurus are back I try again.

I'm trying to set up a test using query and reply strings to check the 
status (alive or dead) of a samba service running on a different 
machine (heartbeat test). What would be a good set of strings to use, 
and at what port?

Any suggestions appreciated!
