If samba is the server then there is hope ...

Since you said that you can create large files on ext2 the local
filesystem should not be a problem (including glibc and kernel 2.4.1).

The samba configure script checks for "LFS" and perhaps it fails to detect
that you have support. Did you compile yourself your use an rpm? Perhaps
it would work better if you compiled a version yourself. That would allow 
you to see if it detects things properly during ./configure.
