LDAP authentication and unencrypted passwords (was 2.2 release...)

Am I correct in thinking that, if Samba is set "use encrypted passwords =
no," it uses system authentication, so one could indirectly use LDAP that
way?

How does the PAM Samba module figure into this?

(I posted a related inquiry previously, but, if there was a reply to the
list, I missed it.)

The ability to store full user account information
(all the fields from User Manager for Domains) in
an LDAP directory.  Multiple Samba servers could the
utilize this tree without having to do current things
such as replicated smbpaswd to each server.
