Samba 2.0.7 compile problem

I just installed Redhat 6.1 and downloaded Samba sources for 2.0.7.

After initiating "make" I received the following error:

....
checking whether the C compiler (gcc -0) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.
make: *** [config.status] Error 1

Does this mean I have to load a different C compiler or some other SW for the compile to work ???
As one can readily observe, I am NOT a Linux heavy......
