profile files are in user's home dir

An easy one for you experts, I think.

All was well until some time back, but now my users' profile data are in
their respective home directories instead of being in /home/user/profile.

I am using W98 domain logon and individual profiles.  One thing I am sure
of is that Samba is ignoring my "logon path" parameter, which at the
moment is set to "\\<host>\profiles\%U as per the Samba in 24 hours book.

Running Linux with Samba 2.0.6.
