I had once set NIS+ with Samba. This is a quick how-to...

(1) generate NIS+ table

 # source/script/mknissmbpwdtbl.sh
 
(2) convert existing smbpasswd to NIS+ table

 # cat smbpasswd | source/script/mknissmbpasswd.sh

(3) add proper permissions to smbpasswd.org_dir and smb.groups_dir

(4) modify smb.conf
  For example

  smb passwd file = smbpasswd.org_dir
  encrypt passwords = yes
