how can I protect symlinks?

Whenever I edit and save a file with a Win98 client that is only a
symlink to another file the symlink is converted to a normal file. The
changes are saved to the symlink and the file the former symlink pointed
to is not modified. How can I prevent this from happening? Btw, when I
edit the symlink with an NT client everything is OK, the symlink is
preserved as expected and the file the link points to is modified.
Setup: SuSE Linux 6.3, samba-2.0.6-16
TIA,
Hans
