Fwd: ping to server pings client

I posted this question before but unfortunately it did not help. Maybe now 
someone has a clue?

I have a strange problem on windows 98 SE:
when pinging to the sambaserver using the name, it is resolved to the local 
machine, not
to the server, but I have both, c:\windows\hosts and c:\windows\lmhosts 
with correct IP adresses. They seem to be ignored for that. The same wrong 
resolution happens when calling the webserver.
Does anyone know the reason?
