Thanks Herb,

I'm really close, but I still have the same problem. I removed the two
shared memory segments and semaphores, then rebooted. The same two shared
memory segments returned. I suspect they belong to some process initiated
at boot time. The error I get from smbd is:

[1999/09/16 09:50:52, 2] smbd/server.c:open_sockets(183)
  waiting for a connection
[1999/09/16 09:57:08, 0] locking/shmem_sysv.c:sysv_shm_open(590)
ERROR semctl: can't IPC_STAT. Error was Bad address
[1999/09/16 09:57:08, 0] locking/locking.c:locking_init(174)
ERROR: Failed to initialise share modes

>From smbstatus I get:

ERROR semctl: can't IPC_STAT. Error was bad address
ERROR semctl: can't IPC_STAT. Error was bad address
ERROR: Failed to initialise share modes
can't initialise shared memory - exiting

Any additional help would be greatly appreciated.

Eric
