smb 2.X and DNS?

Under samba 2.0.3 (and 2.0.4b) I get the following error when using only the hsotname from a command line on an NT box:

net view \\hostname

	System error 53 has occurred.
	The network path was not found.

If I use the fully qualified name:

net view \\hostname.ecn.purdue.edu

It works fine. I get this behaviour under 2.X only. Both methods work jut fine under version 1.9.18p10 from the same PC.

Is there an option I missed under the 2.X version of samba?
